Nature

Why Nature Matters

We know that spending time in nature has a powerful impact on mental health and wellbeing. Natural environments can help reduce stress, lift mood, and encourage a sense of calm and belonging.

For young people, being outdoors offers a welcome break from daily pressures and opens up new ways to express themselves, build confidence, and form meaningful connections.

At More Than a Thought, we use our permanent green space as more than just a backdrop – it’s an active part of our approach. Through outdoor therapy sessions, group activities, hands-on projects, and just, being you. We harness the restorative qualities of nature to help you and your young person feel grounded and supported. Whether it’s exploring the garden, taking part in creative sessions under the trees, or simply finding a quiet spot to reflect, we believe that nature offers unique opportunities for healing and growth.

An example of project work might be:

  • Project work in our green space might include gathering around the fire pit for storytelling or reflective conversations, which fosters a sense of community and trust.
  • Young people can engage in shelter making, learning practical skills and teamwork as they build dens or temporary structures from natural materials.
  • Cooking sessions—offer hands-on experience with nutrition and the satisfaction of creating and sharing meals outdoors.

Our activity course encourages collaboration and confidence-building, while reflective circles beneath the trees and nature walks provide a safe space to share thoughts, set goals, and celebrate progress together. Team games, such as basketball and rounders foster shared achievement, learning to rely on others, sharing success and failure together.
